I've been trying to get my strings to look as old as possible on my 69 so I can pull of that look that says 'found by parents under their 65 yr sons bed'. I've tried Black muriatic acid but now I'm loosing my finger prints. I've tried leaving it in the car on hot sunny summer days but now all the screws and pup covers have rusted as well. I also have left them go unchanged but the grinding sound & feel on my frets is horrible. I can see metal shavings on the fretboard after I wiggle a fretted note around! But those divots in my frets really make it look real vintage too!

Why is this important to me? Because I like to impress people with what I have and what I can buy because what I am isn't that impressive. I am a very superficial and shallow person so I need things in life that compensate for that. A forgotten bedroom gem story really gets em everytime and folks think I am just so lucky that I just have to be special!! In fact, folks call me Special Ed! Ed must be someone famous because my name isn't Ed.

My next job is going to be to distress a supremely well preserved Cherry 65 SG Jr's pristine paint job with gouges, ballpeen hammer bangs and paint scrapper edge divots and chips. Then Im planning on doing a crappy homemade router job so I can screw in a pair of humbuckers right to the body like a 60's highschoolers science experiment gone wrong but sounding oh so right!! That should win me the affection of some ladies I been stalkin...ahh... looking at..er I mean checking out for a while since I moved into Moms basement... 15 years ago.

Let me know if you need some advice getting that switch tip screwed on so it looks vintage & original. I know how they used to put them on at the factory back in the day.

Rock dat shizzle my gizzle.

I once sanded down the volume/tone knobs and selector switch on a Strat and have to say that it made them feel very good and solid. It also provides a better grip.
I'm sure you'll like it.:)

Do switch tips get very scuffed? I've never really noticed. I would think they wouldn't get too much scuffing action, honestly. If it were me and I wanted to make it look aged, I might just hit it with a bit of Dullcoat to take some of the shine off, but, like I said, I've never taken much notice of how mussed switch tips get. Pics when you're done! I always like looking at that black Firebrand, hoping one day you'll want to sell it. :laugh2: Cuz, ya know...I need another SG...

thanks! you might save me from possibly buying tools from StewMac or *eek* shipping it back to the Gibson factory for proper re-installation.

I've had good results using sticky mucus

and handling the gtr part (switch tip) while still gooey and then letting it dry to form a flat finish that dulls the shine as well as adds a texture that resembles years of grimy build up. That picture may actually be smegma as I pasted it from a family planning website but I found that also works just as good as boogers when it dries.

I waste nothing by the way...

Make sure to store the guitar parts with a silica pack until it all dries hard to prevent mold from growing like on Frank Zappa's booger blowing window.

Some people think this relicing technique is nutty, but itsnot!
