I've decided to start socking away a few bucks a week, maybe for a year or so, to put towards my next SG. I'm at the "I dont want to sell any more of my gear to fund new purchases" stage of my playing, and I'm ready to start saving for something.

That said, I have a 2012 SG Standard, Heritage Cherry with coil tapped humbuckers. I'd like to add an SG with P90's. Let's say within a year my budget my $1,000-$1200. What would YOU be looking for? Vintage, or a more modern used model?

Thought this might be a fun thread as well. :)

If you want an SG with P-90s, I'd look for a used SG classic
or else a used SG "50s Tribute."

Another good possibility would be the Gibson SG Pete Townshend special...

It's a lot more money, but a very cool guitar.

IMHO the "vintage" guitar market is a can of worms, and I would recommend
avoiding that like the plague. Buy a used recent SG that is no more and no less
than it seems... then rock. Ignore all the hype, and the illusion and fantasy that
permeates the 'vintage" guitar world.

Some people can buy guitar after guitar. For the rest of us mortals, squirreling away money is a necessity.

If you decide to go the non-vintage route, hard to beat the current production Specials with P90s. I let this one go (already) but it played and sounded as good as it gets. Bound fretboard with '61 body with deep carves, great sounding P90s, though not a huge choice of colors, both Pelham Blue and the Burgundy look great.

Totally agree! The recent years used market is affordable and quality. Would cut the saving time down and should be able to find something solid.

That is a real beauty! Pelham blue is a color I'd be after so this is definitely on the watch list. When I bought my SG Standard, I ALMOST bought a Silverburst 2012 Standard instead, I've always loved the Silverburst!

SG Classic is a really great choice but the new SG Specials in Sparkling Burgundy and Pelham Blue are a great deal on the used market too.
I'm actually surprise at their buy it new price.
Best of luck on your quest.

2011 Gibson made a '60's tribute SG. It had P90's, dot markers, a small (however single ply) pickguard and a '60's neck profile. I played one in Guitar Center and it felt very close to my '69 Special. They range in price from $500 to 1,000., new they were $800ish. A couple of years ago they also released The Naked SG, P90's no pickguard and a '60's profile 24 fret neck, they were originally $1400ish, but went on sale at years end for half price, and there were plenty. Those are the two that I would be looking for when I was ready to buy.

+1 on the 2019 SG Specials. Its fit and finish are the best of the four SGs I've owned. Sounds amazing. Plays great. Stays in tune all day. Aaaannnd - it's gorgeous. 73019904_1133324486873444_7607492330920083456_n.jpg
