Does anybody here own a Gibson SG jr? I have never seen one in person so I havn't played one. How do they play? Sound? and Feel? I am debating on if I get a gibson and what one to get. I will have enough for the faded which latley (they all seem pretty crappy) and I will have enough for the Menace (which I dont like) I also will have enough for the jr. I have never played a guitar with a P90 before so how do they sound also?

I don't have an SG Junior but I do have several guitars with P90s and they sound great. Juniors are great rock guitars but if you can get a model with twin P90s they are much more versatile. Worth considering. :)

Beautiful Guitars. I LOVE Juniors, not bothered whether it's an SG or a Les Paul.
The early SG Juniors had a real Bark to them, I suppose the differences between a New One and an Older One comes down to so many different things, Timbers Used, Pickups, Finishes etc?
Some of you will remember this one, My Ex Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) 1962 Sg Junior.

This was a VERY Powerful Guitar.

However......The Suprise Package was THIS.........................

THIS is a 2001 59 RI Double Cut LP Jnr. It is without a doubt a MILLION times nicer than the SG. Sorry, but it's true. It's Powerful enough to actually be "almost" verging on Out Of Control!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing that I can say about a Junior is that you'll NEVER get Bored!!!!! They are Just SIMPLE, But Oh SO Punchy!!!!

Some people reckon its the extra mass of the LP Jrs slab body that makes a difference. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

JR's are very cool expecially ones from the 60's. The lack of routing definately makes it sound a little different than a vintage special (currently the classic) with 2 p90's.

The only drawaback is minor intonation issues since the bridge can't be adjusted.

Thanks for all the info. I just thought about considering it earlier. I didn't like them before then I started reading reviews and looking at pics now I am definitly considering one.

I play Hard Rock and Classic Rock and Some metal. What would the Junior cover from those music types?

All easily except for maybe the last. Although Iommi used a P90 SG in the early Sabbath days... and Santana and Townshend used them a lot in the '60s.

You gotta have P-90's in something to make your guitar arsenal complete.
I had an Epi Junior for awhile, it was a cool guitar and cheap. I paid $90.

I now have a Guild Blues 90 (Blues Bird with Duncan P-90's) and a home built mutt Strat with Fender Dove P-90's.
They have a unique sound you can't get anywhere else.

I find them most appealing with a clean tube amp cranked up pretty hard. The big single coils will drive an amp pretty hard before distortion starts to muddy things up. A little knob fiddling can yield a bitchin' tone.

I have a '69 Junior. It's a great guitar. The neck is like a Louisville Slugger, and you can barely fit a blonde p-hair between the strings and the frets. It's insane! A Junior is an excellent choice, by all means.

I love my '67.

Even unplugged it sounds like an SG.

Cranked up without gain, it absolutely sings, and with gain it'll take the stubble off your chin.

Sweet Pics!
Do those Dog Eared P-90s have a different tone than the P-90s in my modern SG Classic?

sgtbeefheart, what's the bridge set-up on that little beauty? Does it have the staggered saddles? If so, do the strings catch on them when you use the vibrola?

[/quote]Hi Dickie.
Yes it does have the compensated bridge, and no the strings don't snag.

The vibrola moves the strings back and forth rather than side to side, so it shouldn't happen.

They've made deep grooves in the bridge over the years anyway so no chance.

sgtbeefheart, that's interesting. I'd maybe expect the tuning to be less stable with that bridge than with the old rounded version, especially with the wound strings going back and forth over that little ridge. But I guess that's still less friction than the saddles on a tuneomatic.

Never having had a guitar with a Maestro myself, I wonder if they're not really half as bad as a lot of people say. (They look damned cool anyway!)
