Why are you people so afraid of rap? Are you that childish.

I do not blame anyone who got into rap. JUST LIKE ROCK n ROLL, it came around at a time where the music was dull. Unless you had an older brother or knowlegable parent to show you the good stuff, the rock n roll that was popular was pretty damn bad in the 80's. Rap culture, which was a real movement and a total revolution and rebellion for not only inner-city politics but also a revolution of the airwaves, and I'm not suprised that a whole lot of kids want to listen to that over Winger and Poison.

Fast forward twenty years, and what "rock" is on TV? Daughtry? Nickleback? Hinder? It's horrendous! Even worse than the hair metal of the 80's. Yet still, the performers in hip hop and rap who are the best in the business (for the most part) are on the airwaves.

If the business of rock n roll wasn't so, ROYALLY turded up, we might see younger, more promising and original bands get on TV, and maybe kids would have a reason to listen to rock instead of rap. I was lucky, I had someone to show me what real rock was. But people who have to rely on the charts and on television....I don't blame them for choosing Run DMC over Warrant in the 80's, and I wouldn't blame them for choosing Kanye West over HINDER now...

I agree. Nickleback and Hinder do SUCK. I'm real tired of the overrated bands of our time. Panic! At The Disco? Please. I'd rather scrape my eyes out with a cheese grater than listen to that. But once you actually listen to at least SOME of the new stuff out there and see them live, It's amazing how much better it is than Nickleback and Hinder. I mean, you got The Raconteurs, Wolfmother, My Chemical Romance is at least pretty good, The OLD Greenday, The White Stripes are making a new album, I mean, Not all new rock is bad. And if you STILL think it is then check out my band:

We are a mix of influences from The White Stripes to AC/DC.

I'm not saying that new rock is bad, just new rock in the mainstream. Do you think that a band like the Who or even Led Zep would be making it on TV these days if they were a new band?

There is incredible rock being made, maybe even some of the best rock of all time, but you aren't going to find it if you aren't in the know, because it ain't getting on tv.

im not too worried about it... we know where to find the music we like. and i think mainstreem music in general wont be around much longer. big corperate record companies are almost a thing of the past now with all the DIY and digital distro, indy labels, etc... its still got a ways to go, but its happening. we can thank iTunes

Just to bring a little positive news to the scene. Rock is having a bit of a comeback with young people. Least that is what is going on in my area (dallas, Tx). You should see all the kids with Zep and beatles and who and VH tee-shirts. And if you check the song list on their ipods, same music on there!

Not saying the kids don't like rap because alot still do but it is starting to fade and as the ever optimist, I hope at least some of the ex rappers will move to the classic rock genre. Oh and there are lots of new young bands cranking out some cool classic rock/indie/alternative stuff. Seems they are blending all three into a new form which I happen to like alot. I've been doing my best to influence my kids band to get them to write and perform some classic rock along with the other stuff they like. (fingers crossed it is working).

Brian Johnson said it best "rock n' roll aint noise pollution, rock n' roll will never die!....Rock n' roll it will survive...yes it will"

Thanks to bands like Wolfmother among others, classic rock is makin' its way back to the top, where it belongs!

I dont have anything against rap but i wouldnt wanna hear 50 cent singin' "whole lotta love"
I think the band that did it best (rap/rock) was RATM

i too believe that classic rock is making a comeback, but it is very slow.

teens in my town (near SF) all listen to rap/hyphy music, which is the worst of all.

but then there are lots of people who listen to classic rock stuff.

and yes, new bands are starting to play more classic rock based stuff (like my band). And we've even talked to a record exec at Atlantic and they agree that rock is making a come back and are thinking of signing more bands like that.

Things go in cycles.  Classic rock never really went away.  As for rap, I don't despise it, though it's certainly not what I prefer to listen to.  It will run its course and the better elements of it will be absorbed into the mainstream rock tradition, as happened with disco, reggae and punk.

One reason put forth for the rise of rap, which makes some sense to me, is that the financial cutbacks on school music programs in inner city schools left the kids there with no avenue for learning to play a real instrument.  Thus, they invented hip-hop, which doesn't require such knowledge.  What I do find contemptable is when spoiled white college kids adopt this form of expression, which has absolutely nothing to do with their pampered, sterile existences.  I also don't care for the violent, money-obsessed, misogynistic lyrics of some rap but some other hip hop makes some very telling social and political points and is valuable for that reason..

Solid wood guitars of any sort will almost certainly appreciate in value as the popular guitar woods become scarcer.  Laminites, etc., will become the general rule in the future.  Heck, Danelectrico was making solid bodies from Masonite 40 years ago!  We need to hold onto and cherish our mahogany SGs as there won't be many more made.

Pop culture these days is in the gutter, that's coming from a 17-year-old. It does have it's laughs though. I love it when people like Avril Lavigne get up on stage dressed like a punk from the late '70s, (which is reserved for punk bands from the late seventies in my opinion), and procede to complain about the difficulties and oppression of upper-middle class life.

I think that all music is turning to more of an image, created by MTV and VH1 unfortunately in the early 80s, giving birth to the music video that we know to day. It made it more important to be good looking than somebody who could, you know, play an instrument. Classic and skillful rock is starting to make a resurgence though in the music world I think, though the whole image thing is still an issue. The groups are coming from out of the US of course, where rap is not in the lime light. I think that there are several groups to look out for though thesedays. Groups like Wolfmother, Kasabian, the Black Keys (who I think are actually American), the Two Gallants (They're a Cali band and are semi-makin' it. Check 'em out on itunes. Think of Bob Dylan with a twist of punk.) and maybe for you heavier guys out there, Buckcherry (guess where the name came from). We need a really great group to save Rock n' Roll, like the older groups. I think we might just see it too with resurgence in the popularity of classic rock amongst younger people like me.

My Chemical Romance is at least pretty good,

[/quote]
Are you kidding? My chemical romance is no worse than Panic at the disco.
They are an EMO band! Nothing more. They wear Eyeliner for god's sake!!!. They make Songs for 15 year old girls with emotional problems that wear dora the explorer backpacks and cut their wrists.

In my opinion, they are NOT rock & roll. They're a trend as are many other modern bands.

In one ear out the other.
: (

Wolfmother is a great band though (for a modern music it is as retro a you can hear nowadays)
