Good answer, George Lloyd! We see occasional posts by persons who have little feeling for an instrument, and perhaps are backhandedly trying to sell something. Or imagine buying something to turn into a quick profit.

But if you've had this one as long as that, and if you intend to keep it and play it, then I wish you better than well. The idea of making a good player out of something that's been abused appeals to many of us. So persevere! Show us more photos as you do.

There's another thread around here called the '70s Appreciation thread, and you should take some more photos and post them there... you'll be in company with others who own these old war horses, as well as 'blokes' like me who own a '70s tribute SG and a Fender '72 Tele Deluxe replica.

http://www.everythingsg.com/forum/gibson-sg/20545-70s-sg-appreciation-thread.html

anyway, someone who keeps an SG near his computer tuned in open G sounds more like a comrade than a huckster, so Welcome again.

Could be a real 70/71 , all the parts are wrong from head to bottom.

The wood grain , construction looks ok to me. The headstock logo looks fine but a little 'bright' due to the flash ? should be a little more yellowed and the pearl inlay showing a little more action maybe...

If it was sanded down from Cherry that could easiliy loose some f the sharpness of the bewels.

I have a 71 batwing , and this isnt so far away from it construction wise.

If its Fugazi , its some old Japanese Copy that got overhauled...

Got thos asian screwed in bridgeposts....

Does it have bitemarks from the removed Vibrola?

(check Old & Vintage Guitars , Denmark St., London prices, you will be seriously shocked)

You can get vintage guitars cheaper than the ones in Denmark Street, they gotta be the most expensive in the UK lol.
Saying that you can also pick up some great deals on new guitars in Denmark street.
I bought my LTD standard SG there last year for £699 new!!

Is that a neck repair at the heel? Looks like a 70/71 I almost bought in 1976.

wow!...what an incredible response...thanks guys. Yeah the bridge is another wrong'un which is why it has to go. I hadn't actually noticed the crack down by the heel which the camera flash has picked up. I'll have a closer look at that. I've seen one or two SG's that snapped off clean at the headstock...seems to be more of a 'weak point'. The headstock overlay has no varnish on it and is actually quite dull. This adds to the antiquated look and may also be a reason why the logo and 'crown' look uneven and broken. I've come across much older ES semis, LP's and acoustics that had headstocks that looked beaten up like this, which was one reason I liked it.The Ibanez/Tokai theory could be an answer as I seem to remember they were good quality copies, but unsure if they had 'lawsuit' headstock profiles at any time?
In response to your mention of chancing profiteers, Colonel, yes they should be recycled by the guitar police, or at least be taught that they'd sell more guitars if they actually showed real love and enthusiasm....but then if they had souls, they wouldn't want to part with them.. :applause:

It may be a fibre facing on the headstock rather than the holly veneer Gibson normally use(d). I think it was probably another cost-cutting effort by CMI under Arnie Berlin (the "lin" of Norlin). I had a '69 SG Special that had the fibre overlay, same dull look, and they seem to appear on guitars dating from around 69-70. The way to check is to look at the edge of the head where there's some wear: if it's black it's fibre; if it's white it's holly. :)
